Dynamic Matter

The marble elements of Palazzo della Farnesina transform from immobile and permanent into a system seeking balance between static and dynamic matter, between inorganic and organic forms. Within a monolithic stone structure, AI-generated forms propagate, reverberating the palace’s surfaces in an evolutionary tunnel where the difference between the perception of internal and external space, between light and shadow, marks a different flow of time.
The work is part of research on the nature of artificial intelligence and its latent tension towards life. Neural networks trained on the palace’s marbles and biomorphic elements are put in relation with multimodal language systems designed to distinguish the boundary between biological and non-biological. What appears innate for humans to recognize becomes an extremely complex process for AI.

In the research I pursue, tools and artwork overlap, recomposing fragments of scientific code through functions that transform their original meaning. I believe this rewriting approach can open not only poetic and conceptual paths, but also epistemological reflections on the relationship between science and art, on the technological nature of language.
A neural network trained on a dataset of biomorphic and mineral structures generates new three-dimensional forms between organic and inorganic, not according to physical laws and models deduced by humans, but through statistical machine learning techniques.

Two AI image generation models alternate in competition, the first is trained on the dataset of marble elements from Palazzo della Farnesina, the second on a dataset of biomorphic elements. The two models generate new variants, while a third language model analyzes the produced images, trying to distinguish traces of life. The way in which forms emerge from darkness occurs through a relationship between the different AI models created for the project.
The great marble stele thus becomes the container of a generative AI that searches for life, simulating matter, in an echo between the mineral, biological and digital world.
The very nature of AI derives from this tension towards life.
